PTO Shaft
All 5E models have PTO and Economy PTO (E-PTO), which have been improved to maintain a rotation speed of 540 rpm while allowing the engine to work more efficiently, resulting in reduced fuel consumption.
PTO speeds and respective engine speeds: Standard
- PTO: 540 to 2100 rpm
- E-PTO: 540 to 1600 rpm
With this improvement, the PTO application has become 5% more fuel efficient than previous tractor versions (rpm in previous versions: 2400 rpm for Standard PTO and 1700 rpm for E-PTO).

What is E-PTO?
E-PTO is a feature that allows the operator to operate the PTO at 540 rpm, but at an engine rpm lower than the standard PTO rated speed. Depending on the transmission, the 540 E-PTO setting could reach 1600 rpm. The E-PTO allows for reduced fuel consumption, as well as reduced vibration and noise levels during implement coupling.
How it works
On John Deere tractors, switching from 540 (standard PTO)/540E (E-PTO) mode is similar to shifting gears on the transmission. When engaging the 540E mode, the operator changes the gear reduction ratio, keeping the PTO spinning at 540 rpm, but reducing the engine rpm. When the operator shifts the PTO into standard mode, a different gear reduction ratio is used to operate the PTO at 540 rpm with increased engine rpm.
To operate in economy mode, the E-PTO must be engaged before the accelerator, until the engine reaches the proper rpm indicated on the instrument panel.
When to use E-PTO mode
The 540E mode is ideal for many applications including mowing, baling and tilling. This mode cannot be used with the maximum PTO power indicated in the product specifications. For operations that require full power, the tractor must be operated in standard PTO mode.
Detailed engine speed information for each of the standard and economy PTO options is available in the tractor operator's manual.
